After 2 years of in-person viewing, the red carpet has made its return to the Sundance Film Festival 2023.
The indie festival is halfway through its schedule as the film industry, actors, and lovers of all things cinemas braved the snowy Park City, Salt Lake City, to view the 130 films, docs, and short films that are now available to view on demand for online viewers.
Audiences came together in-person over the weekend in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Sundance Resort with talent including Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, Alia Shawkat, Skye P. Marshall, Jonathan Majors, Jason Momoa, Michael J. Fox, Daisy Ridley, Alexander Skarsgård, Gael Garcia Bernal, Randall Park, Brooke Shields, and more who walked press lines and red carpets for their world premieres.
The 2023 program available online includes all dramatic competition films featuring the buzzed-about movies and docs that include Sometimes I think About Dying; Little Richard: I Am Everything, A Thousand and One; The Pod Generation; Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie; Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project; Cassandro; Fremont; Infinity Pool; The Starling Girl, Mutt; Judy Blume Forever; Divinity; Eileen; Flora and Son and Drift.
Jonathan Majors bodybuilder drama, Magazine Dreams, has stood out as a buzzy film for his performance that has been critically well-received and followed with a standing ovation at the premiere. Cast members Taylour Paige, Elijah Bynum, and Haley Bennett attended the red carpet with writer-director Elijah Bynum.

Director Qasim Basir’s film, To Live and Die and Live, part of the NEXT category, features actor Amin Joseph as Muhammad, a Hollywood film director who returns home for his step-father’s funeral. He deals with addiction which he hides from his family and the world. And that takes him out into the drug-saturated after-hours of Detroit, where he meets Asia, portrayed by Skye P. Marshall in a stand-out performance.
Other films to look out for are Writer-director Justin Chon’s Jamojaya with rapper, Rich Brian making his feature debut as an actor. Director Susanna Fogel’s Cat Person, starring Emilia Jones and Nicholas Braun is a provocative portrait of modern dating Inspired by the most-read piece of fiction ever published in The New Yorker, Kristen Roupenian’s short story “Cat Person.”
On Monday, January 23rd, The Pod Generation was awarded the 2023 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize and received a $20,000 cash award from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation reception on Monday, the 23rd of January.
The Prize is selected by a jury of film and science professionals and presented to an outstanding feature film focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character. The 2023 jury for Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize included Dr. Heather Berlin, Jim Gaffigan, Dr. Mandë Holford, Shalini Kantayya, and Lydia Dean Pilcher.
